The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has issued clear instructions stating that students should not have marks deducted for language subjects such as Marathi, English, and Hindi in the 10th standard if they draw diagrams with a pencil instead of a pen.
Nafees Shaikh, who served as a moderator for the Marathi subject in the state education board, wrote a letter to the board demanding clarification on this matter. In response to Shaikh's demand, the board assured him that the ambiguity regarding marks deduction would be resolved.
A notice has been sent to all regulators regarding this issue. Instructions will be provided to all regulators during the regulatory meeting for all language subjects. Regulators will then communicate these instructions to their respective examiners. If students draw comprehension activity diagrams with either pen or pencil and their answers are correct, full marks should be awarded. The Board has informed Shaikh that instructions will be given to refrain from deducting half marks simply for drawing the figure with a pencil.

The confusion stemmed from inconsistencies in the grading process. Teachers checking the papers were deducting half a mark if a figure was drawn with a pen. Sometimes, half a mark was also deducted at the moderator level.
While the question paper instructs that figures should be drawn with a pen, there is no directive to deduct marks if the figure is drawn in pencil. This lack of clarity led to supervisors and moderators questioning why these marks were being deducted, causing unnecessary distress to students.

महाराष्ट्र राज्य माध्यमिक और उच्चतर माध्यमिक शिक्षा बोर्ड ने स्पष्ट निर्देश दिए हैं कि 10वीं कक्षा के मराठी, अंग्रेजी और हिंदी जैसे भाषा विषयों में पैराग्राफ के आधार पर ड्राइंग कॉम्प्रिहेंशन अभ्यास के लिए पेन के बजाय पेंसिल का उपयोग करने पर छात्रों के अंक नहीं काटे जाएंगे।. राज्य शिक्षा बोर्ड में मराठी विषय के मॉडरेटर के रूप में काम करने वाले नफीस शेख ने बोर्ड को पत्र लिखकर इस भ्रम को दूर करने की मांग की थी. इस मांग पर सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए बोर्ड ने शेख को सूचित किया कि अंकों को लेकर अस्पष्टता दूर कर दी जाएगी. सभी नियामकों को सूचना - इस संबंध में सभी भाषा विषयों की नियामक बैठक में सभी नियामकों को निर्देश दिये जायेंगे. नियामक अपने संबंधित परीक्षकों को निर्देश जारी करेंगे। यदि छात्र पेन या पेंसिल से बोधगम्य गतिविधि आरेख बनाते हैं, तो उत्तर सही होने पर उन्हें पूर्ण अंक देने चाहिए। बोर्ड ने शेख को सूचित किया है कि निर्देश दिये जायेंगे कि सिर्फ पेंसिल से आकृति बनाने पर आधे अंक नहीं काटे जायेंगे. वास्तव में गड़बड़ी क्या थी? पेपर चेक करने वाला शिक्षक पेन से आकृति बनाने पर आधा अंक काट लेता है। यदि वे ऐसा नहीं करते हैं, तो कभी-कभी मॉडरेटर स्तर पर आधा अंक काट लिया जाता है। प्रश्नपत्र में निर्देश है कि आकृति पेन से बनायी जाये. हालाँकि, पेंसिल से आकृति बनाने पर आधे अंक काटने का कोई निर्देश नहीं है। तब कुछ पर्यवेक्षक, मॉडरेटर पूछ रहे थे कि ये अंक क्यों काटे जाते हैं। इस अस्पष्टता के कारण छात्रों को अनावश्यक परेशानी उठानी पड़ती है।
